Hello all-!
No show this week due to finals and general end of the semester chaos.
Last weeks show was soooo good. I hope some of you were able to tune in. The mp3 recording device recorded about 20 seconds then snapped off. So, very sadly, I do not have an mp3 of this show. However, if I continue the show this summer, I hope the have Belinda and Brad on again.
In the mean time check out this link to upcoming conferences that the DMC is hosting this summer!
Have a great week- and I'll keep you updated here if the show goes on for the summer.
Thanks!
Katarah
Hello all!
This week we will be speaking with Brad Richardson and Belinda Creighton-Smith from the Disproportionate Minority Confinement Resource Center. We will be discussing the disproportionate incarceration of non-white youths in Iowa and what DMC is doing to change this- and how you can get involved. The statistics are shocking. For example, regarding racial injustice did you know that Iowa is one of the worst places you can live if you are African American? Or that, even though African Americans only make up 3% of the Iowa state population, African American youths are 6.5 more likely to be incarcerated for the same crime as committed by white kids? Please join us and hear some facts that will startle you- and hopefully move you into action.
Last week's show was great! Below is the link for the last week's interview with the UI Antiwar Group. Sadly, Andrew Duffy could not make the show, but we had a good interview and a great time, nonetheless.
After downloading the mp3, you will want to fast forward it to the time code of 13.50- as this is where the interview begins.

Hello all!
I was very lucky to be able to bring back some of the members from the UI Antiwar group, along with Andrew Duffy of Iraq Veterans Against the War. This promises to be a highly informative show. I am very excited and Honored to have Andrew on this show and hear first hand from someone who has been to Iraq about what is actually happening there. The horror stories are out there if you look for them, but you'll never seen them on mainstream media. Join us tomorrow and hear the hard truth!

Hello All!
So previously, I had posted a link for the Friends of Iowa Midwives show, which actually ended up being a link for the show with FAWN and the UI Anti-War group Umm...embarrassing). However, I have corrected that error andI also wanted to provide the links here for the three shows that were successfully recorded:
Farm Animals Welfare Network and the UI Anti-War Group: http://www.mediafire.com/?xtzlqxemmym
Friends of Iowa Midwives:http://www.mediafire.com/?dgc0myzd2a
UI Environmental Coalition: http://www.mediafire.com/?i10q1ooysyx
I am currently working on trying to get the Domestic Violence Intervention Program and the Women's Resource Action Center on next Wednesday to talk about their project, the Men's Anti-Violence Council. Even if I can't get them on next week, please take a moment to check out their sites and see what they are up to.
Have a great week!

Happy Earth Day all!
So my guest for tomorrow had to cancel last minute- which is a drag. But these things happen. I was hoping to talk with the campus' Islam group about what they are doing, plus address some of the stereotypes that people associate with Islam as our media portrays people who follow that religion as radical extremists bent on terror. It is like saying that all Christians belong to the Fred Phelps' church.
In the meantime, I would like to promote Dr. Shirin Ebadi, as she is coming to lecture tomorrow on human rights conflicts in Iran. I only found out today that she was coming. I tried to see if I could arrange for her to come on tomorrow, but she is on a very tight schedule and was not available. However, please check her out if you get a chance!
Per the UIowa website:
Shirin
Ebadi, an Iranian lawyer who received the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize for
her work advocating human rights in Iran, will deliver the 2008 Levitt
Lecture at 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 23, in the Second Floor Ballroom of
the Iowa Memorial Union on the University of Iowa campus.
Finally- with Earth Day in mind, here are some tips on how to re-use 2 Liter Bottles:
Hello All-
Wednesday, we will be chatting with Kyle Sieck and company from the UI Environmental Coalition. This group came on as my first guest at the beginning of the semester. It was a great show, but it was also the same day of a huge snow storm, and I don't know how many listeners were able to receive the show as the KRUI antennae tends to freeze up on those occasions and limits our broadcasting ability. And what's more, environmental issues are a major concern to anyone who's been paying attention to the ever-worsening condition of our planet; ideas on how to make a real change are more important than ever.
We will be covering the following topics (and more!):
And FINALLY- an mp3 of one of the shows! I thought I would never see the day...
The interview with Friends of Iowa Midwives was amazing and a true joy to do. I hope you check it out if you weren't able to hear it the first time. As the file is to big to be uploaded directly onto Vox.com, you can click here to download it and listen to it for free. Just click where it says "Click here to start download..." Hello all!
This week I will just be DJing music- but feel free to listen in and join me anyway. I've got some upcoming shows that I am still working out with various groups- and I'll give you those details as soon as they are finalized.
Good news: I do have two shows that were successfully recorded onto mp3s. I will get those edited soon and post them for all to hear.
In the meantime, enjoy this clip on creativity and education- a talk given by Sir Ken Robinson. Feel free to give feedback- your reactions are welcomed!

This week I will be interviewing Monica Brasile, Kristin Bergman and Kathy Deol from Friends of Iowa Midwives. This weeks show will be starting about 15 minutes late, as KRUI is interviewing a band member from These United States.
Friends of Iowa Midwives is an organization that describes itself as " a grassroots organization working to promote access to midwifery and out-of-hospital birth in Iowa, protect the rights of Iowa women to choose their place of birth and birth attendant, provide education about childbirth options, and create supportive community for birthing women and families." This promises to be an very interesting and informative show on a local issue that too many people know little or nothing about.
Below is a short documentary style video that explores some of the issues that we will be discussing this Wednesday. Monica Brasile is also featured in this video which was co-created by yours truly.
Hello all-
For those of you who had spring break, I hope it was enjoyable!
This week we will be talking to two different groups.
In the first half hour, Juniper Alcorn will be talking about the Farm Animals Welfare Network group whose purpose is "to provide a resource and activity group for University of Iowa students and community members concerned about the mistreatment of animals in factory farms."
In
the second half, Keri George will join us as we discuss the Week of Reflection
(aka Peace Week), which is happening right now, and other activities and
projects that the UI Antiwar group will be participating in.
